Uaajeerneq - Maskplay
Uaajeerneq- maskplay is a modern version of one of the traditional East Greenlandic drum-dances, which William Thalbitzer has described as an entertainment play. The performer smears his/her face in ashes and use a drum as an accessory and makes a play about everyday situations. Men dressed out as women and vise versa. They could for example show stories from kayak-hunting, dog-sledding etc. Others have a theory, which says that Uaajeerneq used to have a religious meaning. Today Uaajeerneq is performed by many people. As mentioned, there are different theories about this play. Some say that it has only been practiced for the sake of pure entertainment, and others say that Uaajeerneq has three purposes: 1) Pure entertainment, simply use the mask to make the audience laugh. 2) Dance of fertility, a sexual ritual and reversal of roles whereby the man becomes a women and the woman becomes a man. 3) The final purpose is to educate and teach especially children about fear, so that they are able to defend themselves in the future. Uaajeerneq may cause some people to feel uncomfortable.
